Breath, Eyes, Memory was written in 1994 by Haitian author Edwidge Danticat. This novel was selected for Oprah’s Book Club with good reason: Danticat writes about a girl and the women in her life who each have a part in raising her. These women, too, each have a burden to bare. Set in both Haiti and New York, we learn about fierce women who don’t depend on the shoulders of men to hold them together. Instead, they lean on each other.
