I wanted to read When I was Puerto Rican on my holiday vacation while in Haiti because I wanted to appreciate both of my cultures at the same time (even though I already do daily!). What I can appreciate the most about Esmeralda Santiago‘s story is that it is so relatable. It’s a story of a girl growing up, finding herself–learning about the ever evolving world and its politics. And it was hilarious to read names that are in my family. It made me think: um, so are all Puerto Ricans named the same?! Haha! Santiago showed her fearless attitude throughout her first memoir and it has made me anxious to discover what her others reveal.
